Mrs. Knauf. I met her and Mr. Knauf ( Mr. Blue Eyes!) when they needed a few sewing alterations. She saw my name in The Advertiser, and called. That started a long, and loving, relationship that evolved over the years from customers to dear friends. They were something, those two! From stories about their beloved camp, the children and the grandchildren, to the Recluse spider bite Mr. Knauf suffered through, but beat it, and then his death - Mrs. Knauf and I became even closer. When she moved to Queensbury, it was OK, she needed to downsize and that wasn't too far away. I could still visit and I did, with my husband, Jerry, who was also taken with her spritlyness in her later years. It was then that she insisted I call her "Doris". Well, my upbringing made that pretty hard - I had so much respect for her and Mr. Knauf, I could barely make myself do it, but for her, I did, and honestly, it was easier when we exchanged letters and cards.
It was a real challenge when she moved to Sherburne with Janet. I thought that was it, for sure, for our relationship. But we still managed to keep in touch and it was always a joy to hear from her. Two funny stories - well, one not really funny, she lost a beloved grandson a few years back, the services were here in Castleton. Janet arranged for me to stop in at the wake and Doris and I could see each other and visit, even during such a sad time. I was worried that a few years had passed and she wouldn't recognize me, but when I entered the room where she was, her face lit up like a Christmas tree! I will never forget that visit, and as much as I felt like an intruder, it was such a joy to see her, thinking maybe it would be the last time. The second unbelievable story happened last year when Janet and Theresa were going away for a week and arranged for Mrs. Knauf to stay at Evergreen Rehabilitation in East Greenbush, just a little over a mile from my house on the same street! Janet called me to let me know, and I was lucky enough to see Doris twice while she was there. A little forgetful, but she was on the ball with who I was, wondering if I was still sewing, asking about my family, and I hers, just like old times. These are the memories I will cherish as the days pass. My only regret is that I will not be able to see her off in person, due to the strict guidelines put in place for everyone's safety, but I hope she knows that I will certainly be there in spirit, and I hope that when she sees Mr Knauf again for the first time, she'll give him a big hug from me. Sorry to be so long-winded, but special people are few and far between these days, and I want her family to know just what an impact she made on my life over the years. Thank you, Doris, and Godspeed! I will think of you often, and especially when I drive by that little white picket fence in front of your beautiful house in Castleton.
With love and respect,
Mary Dwileski
